Another day of strikes planned on railway

-

TRAIN drivers and conductors are set to hold another day of strikes amid an ongoing row over guards and rail safety.

The RMT union has announced further 24-hour industrial action later this month over what it describes as a ‘battle to put safety before profits.’

The walk-out at Arriva Rail North, which operates in the area as Northern, will take place on Saturday, July 21.

All Arriva Rail North conductors, conductor instructors and train drivers who are union members have been instructed not to book any shifts during the 24-hour period.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “It is a tribute to the determination and professionalism of RMT members on Arriva Rail North that they have remained rock solid for over a year now in what is a battle to put public safety before private profit.

“The next phase of action will take place two weeks on Saturday as the company refuse point blank to engage in talks.

“RMT is angry and frustrated that while we are making some progress in discussions in similar safety disputes Arriva Rail North refuse point blank to engage with the union in any meaningful fashion.

“That is a disgrace and speaks volumes about the attitude of this company.”

A Northern spokesperson said: “Northern can confirm that, following our recent invitation, RMT has agreed to meaningful talks early next week regarding its ongoing dispute.”
