FIVE people arrested after a man was stabbed and collapsed in the street following a ‘vicious’ attack have been released ‘under investigation’ by police.

Officers were called to Milkstone Road in the early hours of the morning after receiving reports that a man had been stabbed.

Police said the 42-year-old was attacked on Mere Street, before staggering to Milkstone Road at about 1.10am on Saturday.

It’s understood he went into a takeaway, and collapsed on the pavement after leaving the eaterie.

He underwent surgery and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Detectives launched an investigation and have arrested three men, aged 21, 22 and 23 and two women, aged 19 and 20.

They were all arrested on suspicion of assault and have now been released under investigation, said police.

Officers remained at a number of different scenes as the investigation continued.

Milkstone Road, Boundary Street, Mere Lane, Tweedale Street and Castlemere Street were all blocked off as part of the police inquiry.

A forensic tent was also put up outside a takeaway, believed to be the spot where the man collapsed.

One eyewitness reported seeing the man covered in blood.

It’s thought there could have been a chase, which is why police were investigating in multiple areas.

One of the scenes is thought to be where a weapon was recovered.

The area is home to lots of shops and other businesses.

Many residents said that the first they learned of the stabbing was when they opened up that morning.

Det Sgt Tim O’Callaghan, of GMP’s Rochdale borough, said: “This was a vicious incident which has left a man needing surgery after being attacked in the street.

“Local residents may notice an increased police presence and I would urge anyone who thinks they may have any information that can help to please approach one of our officers.”
