DENEHURST Park has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the best in the UK.

It means the borough now has ten award-winning parks.

Eight of our borough’s parks have retained their Green Flag statuses, while two others - Denehurst and Middleton Memorial Gardens have been recognised for the first time.

Denehurst Park and Middleton Memorial Gardens have both been successful in gaining their Green Flag awards on their first submission. Holding onto their Green Flag statuses are Milnrow Memorial Park, Hare Hill Park, Jubilee Park, Middleton Cemetery, Truffet Park, Hopwood Park, Queen’s Park and Rochdale town centre parks which includes Broadfield Park, Rochdale Memorial Gardens and Packer Sprout and St Chad’s Gardens.

The council’s 10 green flags are among a recordbreaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. In order to qualify, parks and green spaces must be freely accessible to the public and pay attention to sustainability, conservation and heritage.

Coun Neil Emmott, cabinet member for environment, said: “To retain our eight Green Flags is fantastic news in itself but to add a further two to the list is a testament to the hard work of volunteers and council staff.

“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining our sites to such a high standard so that they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community.”
