AN aspiring young writer will have his play A Different story of Rochdale performed on the stage after winning a competition.

Danny Lamb will now be mentored by playwright Nicola Schofield after impressing judges with his creative writing and gripping storyline.

The award-winning writer will work with Danny to turn his exciting idea into a produced play. It will be performed by professional actors in local schools, theatres and at the Rochdale Literature and Ideas festival.

Danny wowed judges with his writing style that tells a unique story about everyday life in Rochdale.

All 14-25 year olds across the borough had been challenged to pen a positive perspective of everyday life in their local community.

The competition was organised in the partnership between Rochdale council, M6 Theatre Company and Touchstones Rochdale.

Nicola said: “There were some fantastic entries but Danny’s script stood out as a unique take on life in Rochdale, with a gripping narrative and fast paced story.

“I am looking forward to working with him and helping to transform his work to the stage. The judges were impressed by the standard of all the entries and the recurring themes of community, friendship and overcoming obstacles.”

Coun Janet Emsley, cabinet member for culture, said: “Many congratulations to Danny on his success.

“The competition was an excellent idea and I am looking forward to Danny’s writing coming alive on the stage. It’s a great opportunity for a talented young writer to further his career and I can’t wait to see his different story of Rochdale.

“Well done to everyone involved.”

The runner-up in the tournament was Radhiya Jabed whose prose and storyline also impressed the judges, with key themes around commu- nity and friendship.

Danny’s play will be showcased at local schools, theatres and at the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival, which this year runs from October 15-22.
