Twickers thrill for young Boro

-

LITTLEBOROUGH finished runners up in the Youth and Mini Section of the Year at the National Rugby Awards at Twickenham this week.

Having been selected in the final six from thousands of entries across the country, the club are overjoyed that the hard work, dedication, sacrifice and fun of its young stars, coaches, volunteers and parents have been recognised in such a fashion.

It is the second time that they have been nominated for a national award in the past three seasons, having also finished runners up to London based semi professional side Richmond in the club of the year category at the same ceremony in 2016.

This year’s ceremony saw the club pitted against Avonmouth Old Boys, Ledbury, Old Halesonians, Kirby Lonsdale, Veseyans Rugby; with the latter taking the trophy back to Sutton Coldfield.

Littleborough were nominated as off the field it has been a very difficult and saddening year due to some unfortunate and devastating events that have taken place.

However on the field, it has very much been the opposite, as all teams from the under 8’s all the way through to the Colts on both boys and girls side have seen increases of at least three per team, there were fairy tale endings for both the girls and boys Colts teams who won The Woody 7s and Lancashire trophies respectively in their last season together.

And the mini teams enjoyed trophy success on the club’s big tour.

The increase in numbers (80) including 50 new players present at the rugby taster day yesterday is even more impressive given that all the teams had to spend the 70% of the season playing away from home due to weather conditions and building renovations at the club.

For many families travelling to places like Leeds, St Helens, Glossop and Fylde takes a lot of commitment but importantly this isn’t putting off the kids from playing.

In March, over 300 people travelled to North Wales to take part in the club’s biggest ever tour. Despite horrible conditions six teams made the final with the under 10s, 11s and 12s all taking home winners’ medal.
