Hamer’s boxers impress mayor
HAMER Amateur Boxing Club received a visit from the Mayor of Rochdale, Mohammed Zaman earlier this month and he was instantly impressed when presented with a very busy session that showcased the diversity, teamwork and camaraderie within the gym.
He was overwhelmed by the skills on display from the young participants and he mentioned this when he told them he once gave boxing a go but it was too tough for him.
He gave them a constructive speech about hard work, discipline, teamwork, commitment and friendship which would also help them achieve better schooling.
The visit coincided with a visit to Rochdale Town Hall by Hamer’s latest National Champion, 11 year old Allana “Top Banana” Shaw who was invited, alongside her family to meet the Mayor for tea and confectionery whilst receiving a certificate and badge for her achievement within the squared circle when beating Lilly Deacon of Rourkeys Gym, Bradford in May to become the first female boxer from Rochdale to win a national title.
The Mayor was equally impressed when Allana told him she had been short-listed for the Rochdale Sports Achiever of the Year awards and that she has been invited to attend the England Boxing School Championships Talent Academy at the English institute of Sport in Sheffield,.
Head coach Steven Connellan said: “It is great that our peers take time out to recognise our boxers’ achievements because it inspires them to go on a achieve greater things within the world of boxing.
“The new season is upon us now but we are still looking for new boxers to come along and reach the same levels as our past champions to make out town proud.”
