Colts sweep aside visitors Newcastle

-

LITTLEBOROUGH’S Junior Colts increased their burgeoning reputation with another emphatic victory at home to Newcastle-underLyme.

Dry and sunny conditions at Rakewood, a far cry from last week, allowed Boro to spread the ball wide and on a nice big pitch they capitalised by running in some great tries down the wing to register a 48-14 win.

Charlie Sutcliffe opened the scoring with the first of his four tries out wide to settle Littleborough nerves in the first five minutes but the Newcastle based outfit responded in kind with a powerplay move that saw some slack tackling from Boro.

This reinvigorated the home side to sway the game back under their control.

Deep kicks from Newcastle Staffs were gladly swept up by Sutcliffe who kept the scoreboard ticking over with another couple of tries to add to increasing tally for the campaign.

Bradley Watts added the extras from the tee.

The visitors were by no means beaten and began the second half downhill and clawed back a try.

Captain Harry Gee rallied the troops again and led from the front with a strong performance while fantastic cover tackling in the backs led by Robbie Nolan’s textbook technique settled the nerves again.

A stellar performance from big Charlie Holmes in the middle of the park gave Boro the edge against a big visiting pack who never gave an inch. Boro had the luxury of having substitutes who did not disappoint.

Jacob Harrison latched onto a pass out wide to claim a try and also slotted a tricky penalty later on.

Newcastle heads dropped as was the pressure building on them as Ben Stott entered the fray and punished the visitors with some powerful and deceptive running.

Young Brody Hartley also made a telling contribution from the subs bench, coming on for a try in the second half.

Charlie Holmes continued to cause more headaches for the away side and his running with the ball and pressure when out of possession earned him a try to close the afternoons’ proceedings.

All in all a really good team performance and the lads are enjoying the rugby. It’s a tough test next week in a cup game against Sefton, but the Colts are more than up for the challenge.
