Southport seal Town’s LFA Cup fate

- BEN SIMMONDS

MIDDLETON Town were unfortunate to fall short in LFA Cup after drawing 5-5 against strong outfit Southport Ainsdale, who went on to win 7-6 on the subsequent penalty shootout.

Danny Goodier claimed yet another hat-trick for Town, as he helped the team come back from a deficit three times to take the game into extra time. Jordan Burton was named Middleton Town’s man of the match.

Despite the solid battling performance on display by Town, they did have to play two thirds of the match with 10 men after an early red card.

Chris Petcu said via social media: “We had some really good support today, which was good to see, onto the next one!”

Town now look towards their Second Round of the Christine Robinson League Cup against Jockey tomorrow.

Jockey were also successful last weekend with an 8-3 win in the Manchester Brick Specialist First Division in their clash against Oldham GPO.

They currently sit tidily in fourth place but have played a game more than the team above.

Meanwhile, Avenue, currently sat in second place, secured their third win of the month with a substantial 6-1 win over Wardleworth.

Anthony Heywood stole the show scoring a goal and getting two assists to set the tone of the attacking play for Avenue.

The win is Avenue’s sixth in the league and are showing real strength in their push for the division title.

Adam Thomas, Avenue’s manager said: “We were quality! We’ve been getting better and better each week and the performance this weekend was topclass.

“We controlled the game from the beginning, sharp passing and high tempo. Every lad out there was doing their job both individually and as a unit. It’s cliché but it was a joy to watch them.

“At the beginning of the season I told you we were here to win this league this season. We’ve had a great start winning six from six but we’re not going to get carried away and we just must take it one game at a time.

“The lads’ attitude is great, and have the performances to match week in, week out.”
