THOUSANDS of pounds are expected to have been raised for charity as Denise Welch wowed guests at her annual winter ball with a spectacular Eastern Promise theme.

The evening, hosted by TV presenter Kate Thornton, raised funds for Rochdale charity The GEM Appeal, which funds research into genetic disorders.

While an exact figure has not been confirmed yet, the GEM appeal expect thousands to have been raised in what is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Former Coronation Street star Denise delivered a sparkling evening featuring dragons and Geishas at the Principal Hotel in Manchester.

Wendy Mills, a fundraiser and trustee with the GEM appeal, said: “We don’t know the total raised yet as there’s the results of the auction and everything to come in but we think it’ll be thousands.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year – all thanks to Denise.”

Natasha Brown of Brown’s cakes, Rochdale, created an amazing threetier Oriental-inspired cake featuring a dragon and has previously created themed cakes for many GEM Appeal events.

Steve Jackson, managing director of Rochdale firm JF Freight, was also present as the firm had supported the evening.

The GEM appeal’s final fundraiser of the year will be a festive Afternoon Tea at the Clock Tower Restaurant in Rochdale Town Hall on Saturday, December 8 between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

Tickets, priced at £15 are available from Wendy Mills on 07580 037995.
