ONE of the Town Hall’s falcons has died after suffering a head injury, the council have announced.

The male peregrine falcon was found weak, hungry and injured in Broadfield Park last week where it was cared for by a member of the public, and local police.

Rochdale Council had hoped that the bird would

be able to return to the wild after an operation at bird charity Wild Wings Birds of Prey.

However, on Friday, June 28 they announced the “really sad news” of its death through a Facebook post.

They added: “Sadly, the falcon passed away shortly before the operation to repair his broken bill.

“It is thought the bird, a male adult believed to be around ten-years-old, had suffered a head injury. A vet will be carrying out a post-mortem next week to find the exact cause of death.

“This year’s juveniles are all said to be doing well and are now flying and hunting. It is hoped the female will find a new partner, when the new breeding season approaches.

“We know how much nature lovers, not just across our borough, but throughout the UK and beyond, avidly follow the fortunes of the falcons living at Rochdale Town Hall, so we will of course keep you updated when we get further information.”

Rochdale Council later added that the three young falcons were thriving, eating well and becoming more independent by the day.

The news of the adult male’s death received hundreds of comments and sympathy from residents.

Hilary Clegg said: “Very sad about the falcon. Thanks to all who tried to save him. Hope his lady finds a new mate for next year. Love following the falcons.”

Dorothy Dwayre said: “I am really saddened to hear this news. I hoped he would be strong enough to get through his Op, but sadly this was not to be. I know everyone watching and those who tried to help him will be absolutely heartbroken but remember you tried your very best and could not have done anymore!”
