APOPULAR Rochdale restaurant celebrated it’s 26th birthday with a 1920s-themed celebration.

Celebrity chef Andrew Nutter opened the restaurant in 1993 and decided in March to host a celebration for this year’s birthday weekend, titled The Monochrome Ball.

Guests were asked to dress the part, and many turned up in Great Gatsby themes, such as flapper dresses, with suits and hairstyles in-keeping.

They were treated to black and white monochrome

food and drink, with the highlight a “secret” bespoke gin bar in the Edenfield Road restaurant’s cellar, harking back to the age of prohibition, when alcohol was banned in the US from 1920 to 1933.

Music was played from a gramophone, and guests could listen to the history of the building - before “police” burst in.

Andrew said: “I couldn’t believe the response rate.

“Everyone did make an effort to dress up.

“It captured imaginations.

“For the gin bar, people would be tapped on the shoulder and asked to make their way to reception. As they’re enjoying people’s it, there’s a knock on the door and the police come in. We really researched it.”

Rossendale Dance and Drama held a 45-minute performance to the tune of 1936 song, Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing), to entertain guests.

Andrew added: “It was a really great weekend.

“I have been here straight from the start, and we bought the manor 16 years ago.

“We have pushed the restaurant ever since, and the feedback we’re getting is great.

“We have members of staff who have been here from the start.

“We have got a really good strong team.”
