Sam calls for vocal support

-

MAYFIELD host Underbank this afternoon in the Kingstone Press NCL Premier division at the Mayfield Sports Centre.

Today is a chance for Mayfield to finally pull out of the bottom three, but to do that they have to beat a decent Underbank side and hope that Leigh Miners go down away at Thatto Heath.

The latter looks odds on, the former is a different prospect.

Underbank have won three of their last four games including a fantastic 40 point win over West Hull.

Coaches Sam Butterworth and Steve Wood are hoping to welcome back Liam Whalley after a long absence with a shoulder injury, they also add Lewis Butterworth to the squad after missing last week.

As seems to be the case this season players return and others drop out, but the coaches know they can only do their best with the players available.

Both returning players are very strong defensively and this will be a massive boost to the team after last week’s performance at Thatto.

With a strong squad they know they are capable of producing the result today and relieving a little of the pressure that is on them at the moment.

Underbank away has been one of the few victories that Mayfield have recorded this season and that may boost the confidence in the side as they go into this game.

Butterworth is also asking for the fans to turn out in numbers today to cheer the boys on.

“If we get a good crowd in good voice it has shown in the past that it is worth points to us,” he said.

“Events have conspired against us lately, without regular home games and the rain, meaning people got out of the habit of coming down.

“I hope they get back to normal this afternoon and support us in numbers.

“In return I also hope that we repay that and put in a match winning performance.

“Last week’s defeat was awful and we will be looking for a positive response to that and I’m sure we have the players in today’s side to provide that response”
