Stags get set for shot at silverware

-

NORDEN go for glory on Sunday when they take on Darwen in the final of the Lancashire Cricket Foundation knockout at Heywood Cricket Club, start 12 noon.

Darwen are the trophy holders, but they could be without a professional tomorrow if rules are followed.

Their signed pro Marques Ackerman was called home early, and rules of the knockout say you cannot engage deputy professionals.

Whoever Darwen field Norden will be at full strength.

The Stags team will include only three players beaten in the 2014 final by Ormskirk at St Annes CC – Steve Pimm, Harvey Fitton, and skipper Hashum Malik.

Stags have had an impressive run to the final, including a semi-final success at Netherfield when all looked lost at one stage only for them to bounce back in a low scoring affair. Harvey has made an openers slot his own this season. Apart from a short spell with Clifton his only club has been Norden. His career was disrupted for a time by his studies, but now an ever present. Dad is the club’s head coach, but Harvey is in the team purely on ability.

Joined the club at the start of the season after spells as both amateur and professional with Walshaw. Top order batsman who set the ball rolling in this year’s knockout with a score of 82 in the first round match at Ramsbottom. The club’s leading spin bowler and accomplished middle order batsman. Previously with Rochdale and Bootle. One of the leading wicket-takers in the Lancashire League last season.

Steve originally joined Norden as overseas amateur. The Kiwi stayed on and met a lass whom he recently married. Batsman and occasional bowler who has taken some vital wickets at times. Superb fielder both close to the bat and as a boundary ranger.

Chris could be termed as father of the team, or at least part of it, as both his sons play. His lengthy career has taken him to various clubs, but he is now settled at Norden. Opening bowler and now tail-end batsman. Played for the England indoor team when that form of cricket was at its height. Top or middle order batsman who rarely disappoints out in the middle. He is also a fast bowler, and one of his best returns was in a cup final.

Joe broke into the first team last season, and apart from a holiday break he has been a regular this term. He has batted down the order and as an opener. Bowls spin and can deliver a very interesting ball.

Dan missed a great part of this season due to other commitments. A top order batsman and fast bowler who was man of the match in the 2015 Wood Cup final.

Jay has never let the side down when called up from the second team. Hard hitting batsman and spin bowler.

Brother of Jay and another who gives his best when called up from the second team. Batsman, but he got his first ever pitch of the ball in a match this season and took three wickets.

Club professional in his second season with Norden. Previously with Monton and Weaste with whom he won many interleague honours. Fast bowler and punishing batsman.
