‘Jealous’ chef threw boiling water over his housemate
Hours earlier he attacked colleague in girlfriend row
ACHEF attacked his colleague after accusing him of flirting with his girlfriend then hours later threw boiling water over his housemate claiming he had done the same thing.
Gianfranco Sanna, 25, left one man with lifechanging scars on his face, chest, back and shoulders and another with a head injuries and bruises.
He had accused both of his victims of having ‘inappropriate sexual relations’ with his then-girlfriend.
At Manchester Crown Court, Sanna pleaded guilty to section 18 wounding with intent and section 47 assault causing actual bodily harm. He was handed an extended sentence totalling 17 years after he was declared as ‘dangerous.’
The court heard how Italian-born Sanna worked as a chef at the Bellavista Restaurant on Wildhouse Lane in Milnrow, alongside his girlfriend who worked there as a waitress.
The first complainant the victim of the section 47 assault - also worked there as barman.
On August 29, 2018, the complainant was working at the restaurant when Sanna, who wasn’t working that day turned up and asked to speak to him outside. The pair went out to the car park and the defendant accused him of making ‘inappropriate sexual gestures’
to his girlfriend.
Prosecutor Simone Flynn told the court how the defendant then swung a punch at his colleague.
This was witnessed by the restaurant manager who rushed outside when he heard a commotion.
“He came out and saw the complainant on the floor and saw the defendant kicking him repeatedly in the chest at least five times”, Ms Flynn said.
“He told the manager how he wanted to kill him and he appeared to be crazed and not of sound mind.”
The manager pushed Sanna away and he left.
The complainant attended hospital with a minor head injury and bruises to his rib cage, jaw and head. In a victim impact statement read to the court, the complainant said this incident has had a ‘massive impact’ on his life and he described Sanna as an ‘angry, jealous man.’
The defendant returned to his home address after this incident - a shared house where he stayed with his girlfriend.
The second complainant was his housemate.
The prosecutor said: “Again, he accused the complainant of inappropriate sexual relations with his girlfriend which he denied”.
The complainant left the room to go to his bedroom.
“Just as he got to his bedroom door he felt something hot over his back and chest and over the side of his face”, Ms Flynn said.
“The defendant had walked 20-feet from the kitchen and thrown the boiling water over him.”
His second victim was admitted to Wythenshawe burns unit with a 6.5 per cent total burn surface area, with burns to his face, neck, chest and back.
In a statement read to the court, the complainant said: “One of the doctors said I could have been blinded.
“I am serving my own sentence.
“I am normally a happy, healthy man but the scars he has caused will never go away.”
Despite admitting the offences to the police during interviews and pleading guilty at his first court appearance, Sanna applied to vacate his pleas twice.
This meant proceedings were adjourned a number times and that one of the witnesses had to come to court to give evidence.
Defending, Claire Brocklebank said her client had moved from Italy with the intention of making a ‘fresh start.’
“It was his intention to lead a law-abiding life and to hold down a settled job”, Ms Brocklebank said.
He had been sentenced for four years in prison for sexual assault and trespassing in October 2012.
He was just 17-years-old at the time. Judge Anthony Cross took this into account and concluded that he was a ‘dangerous’ offender.
He was handed an extended sentence of 17 years, with 12 years and four months in custody and four years and eight months consisting of an extended licence period.
