Audi travelling ‘at high speed’ hit pedestrian, 44, on pelican crossing

AMAN has been arrested after a woman was left fighting for her life when she was hit by a car.

She was struck by a blue Audi on Yorkshire Street, near the Townhead junction, on Sunday afternoon.

The emergency services were called after the collision just before 2.30pm and immediatel­y taped the surroundin­g area off.

Paramedics treated the woman, who it has now been confirmed is 44 years old, at the scene.

Locals said they could see the air ambulance hovering overhead.

She was rushed to hospital where she remains in a critical condition, GMP said today.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident they added.

Officers are appealing for informatio­n about an Audi S4 they say was travelling ‘at high speed’ in the area around that time.

In a statement they said: “Officers are appealing for informatio­n after a 44-year-old woman was left in a critical condition after being hit by a vehicle on Yorkshire Street on Sunday 20 October.

“Shortly before 2.30pm a blue Audi S4 was seen overtaking vehicles at high speed before colliding with the woman who was crossing the road at a pelican crossing. The woman remains in a critical condition in hospital.

“A 26-year-old man has been arrested and police want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage.”

The road was closed for several hours from the

Townhead junction and Elliot Street towards Halifax Road whilst police dealt with the aftermath and carried out enquiries.

Officers are now urging anyone who may have witnessed or have footage of or informatio­n about the collision to come forward.

Police Constable Paul Joynson said: “This is a terrible incident which has left a woman in hospital in a critical condition.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been around Yorkshire Street at the time and can recall seeing a blue Audi S4 travelling at speed to come forward with informatio­n.”
