Mayor’s pride at leading tributes to our war dead
RESIDENTS across the borough will have the chance to pay their respects to those who have made sacrifices in defence of the country at this year’s Remembrance Day Services.
Commemorations will be held on Sunday, November 10 with a number of parades taking place in neighbourhoods across the community.
Representatives from the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force will join veterans and civic dignitaries for the parades, which will be held in Rochdale, Littleborough, Norden, Milnrow and Wardle among others.
Members of the public are invited to attend to show their gratitude to servicemen and women.
The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Billy Sheerin, said: “Remembrance Day is about paying homage to those fallen in all wars and to thank them for the peace we have today.
“We take this time to remember all those affected by wars, the millions who have lost their lives and war veterans and their families.
“We remind ourselves that these sacrifices continue to take place today by our British Armed Forces and remember those who have fallen and continue to fall in conflicts.
“As Mayor, I am proud to be laying wreaths across the borough on behalf of all our communities. It will be a poignant and emotional day. We will remember them.”
From now until Sunday, November 10 the Royal British Legion is holding its annual poppy appeal, which raises money to support British servicemen and women and their families. Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for the armed forces, said the day is an important one for the community.
She said: “It is heartwarming to see people wearing their poppy with pride and to know that thousands of people, as always, will attend the local services across the borough. As cabinet member I am proud of the council’s work to support our Armed Forces community and Remembrance Sunday is about people of all ages coming together to pause, remember and reflect. Lest we forget.”
