Community ‘heroes’ are honoured
WINNERS of 10 community awards were announced in a ceremony designed to celebrate some local ‘heroes.’
The inaugural Wardleworth Community Awards recognised the achievements of individuals who give up their time, energy and skills to go the extra mile for others.
Winners were revealed at a ceremony in Wardleworth Community Centre on Tuesday, December 17.
Over 150 guests turned up on the night, including council leader Allen Brett, deputy mayor Coun Asim Rashid and Coun Janet Emsley.
Shaukat Ali, chairman of the organisation, said: “I’d like to congratulate all our finalists on winning their award and thank them for being such an inspiring voice and example for local people.
“It’s important that we celebrate the community heroes and those who have achieved success so we can motivate the next generation.”
Nominated through an online portal, the awards marked the achievements of volunteers, those who contributed to the community and those who excelled in academia.
Manager Mohammed Doulot Miah, who hosted the evening, said the idea for the awards came about from a weekend school club which provides extra tutoring to students.
He said that, as a result, some of the pupils have made significant improvement and gained entry into grammar schools and top sixth form colleges.
Coun Iftikar Ahmed said: “I have to say that I am very proud to be in my electoral ward tonight to see the incredible work that’s being done and community centres like Wardleworth are needed to deliver much needed projects and initiatives like this.
“What we are doing is bringing hope to the borough, and that aspiration and hope the young people can achieve.”
