Festive cheer for service veterans
FESTIVE spirit was in the air as the Armed Forces community came together for a special Christmas lunch.
More than 100 veterans from across the borough were joined by their friends and family to mark the occasion at Rochdale Town Hall.
As well as a threecourse meal, there were speeches, a raffle and a moment of silence to remember the fallen of past conflicts.
The lunch marked a successful year for the council’s Armed Forces service, with a number of special commemorations, well-attended Remembrance events and the continued popularity of the pioneering Armed Forces breakfast.
Council leader Allen Brett and Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for the Armed Forces, were present to support the event.
Councillor Brett said: “As leader of the council I was delighted to attend.
“The council takes great pride in supporting and valuing our Armed Forces community and the Christmas lunch brings everyone together to reflect on the year gone and to enjoy some festive fun.”
Serving members of the Armed Forces community based in Cyprus will also receive a festive video message, from Councillor Brett and Steve Rumbelow, the council’s chief executive, thanking them for their work.
Councillor Emsley said: “It was a lovely event and, as always, it was great to see so many veterans in attendance. We have a packed programme of events planned for 2020, including more street naming ceremonies and a very special service to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. A huge thanks to all our veterans for all they do. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to them all. Lest we forget.”
