Cancer mum goes on run for charity
AMUM living with incurable cancer is raising money for charity by taking part in a 5k fun run.
Virginia Wills, 49, from Kingsway, Rochdale, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, and was eventually found to have no evidence of the disease.
But sadly, the cancer returned last January and has spread to her stomach, which requires frequent draining. Virgina attends The Christie regularly for treatment, and has already raised £400 for the charity to thank them for their help and support.
Now, she is undertaking The Christie Frosty in Heaton Park, on February 9, with several members of her family.
Participants pass through four themed zones - fog, fire, snow, and ice.
Virginia, who is mum to Chelsie Windsor, 23 and Sophie Windsor, 21, said: “I have incurable stage four which is why I’m so passionate about it.
“I know first hand how amazing the Christie is.
“As soon as you find out you think that’s it, game over - I never dreamed in a year I would be doing anything like this.
“I will be walking it and I’m on medication - I’m treatable, but not curable.
“It could spread and over time it will but until then you get on with it.
“I have lots of support.
“My husband Malcolm went around door to door and raised £200.
“I have to go to the Christie quite regularly everybody is so lovely there - it’s actually a nice place to go.”
Speaking about the cash raised so far, Virginia added: “I’m just so overwhelmed by the generosity of people and their support. “It’s lovely. “A lot of people don’t have much spare money but even the hairdressers have said they’ll help me.
“I like a challenge and I’m excited about the 5k.
“I’m so grateful that I’m able to do it.”
Virginia is joined on the run by her sister-in-law Claire, stepson Paul and his partner, Amy, stepdaughter Rachel, niece Yasmin, daughter Chelsie and her partner Ben, husband, Malcolm and daughter, Sophie.
