Police arrest a man in inquiry over rabbit theft spree

POLICE investigat­ing a spate of pet thefts in Rochdale have made an arrest. Families were left devastated after rabbits and guinea pigs were stolen from hutches at homes across the town.

More than a dozen people reported their pets missing from their back gardens in the Milnrow, Newhey, Kingsway, Spotland, Castleton, Moorland and Firgrove areas in December. More reports were received by police into 2020.

Greater Manchester Police even revealed an officer had been specifical­ly assigned to investigat­e the cases.

Now police in Rochdale have revealed that a man was arrested on Thursday night on suspicion of fifteen counts of ‘theft/burglary.

No age for him has been revealed.

Now police in Rochdale have revealed that an arrest has now been made.

A man was arrested on Thursday night on suspicion of fifteen counts of ‘theft/burglary’, GMP Rochdale posted on Facebook.

No age for him has been revealed.

The force said he remained in custody for questionin­g on Friday.

In the latest case that was reported by the Observer, Nicola Leach said that she was shocked when she discovered her grandson’s guinea pigs Winnie and Wilma had been snatched from the hutch in her garden in the Foxholes

Road area of Rochdale.

She told how she couldn’t bring herself to tell the 10-year-old what had happened.

“It was his birthday on the day they were taken, so we couldn’t tell him,” said Nicola.

“I just found the cage open.”

Residents have joined a Facebook group and CCTV footage of thefts has been posted online.

In a Facebook post on Friday, GMP Rochdale said: “Yesterday evening a man was arrested on suspicion of fifteen counts of theft/burglary relating to the theft of pets across the district.

“The suspect remains in custody this morning.”

No further details have been revealed.
