High School spent a week working in a variety of different businesses including schools, a pharmacy, a dance company and even a funeral director.

Luke Wilkinson went to Manchester firm Presbar Diecasting Limited and the would-be engineer so impressed the bosses he will be back for a further week at February half-term.

He said: “I made a cooling box for the company I was working for and they liked it and I also did mechanical engineering working with dies to manufacture moulds and I had to make sure the moulds were right so they could be used again.

“They wanted me to do another week in February and they may offer me an apprenticeship.”

It was back to her old school Tonacliffe Primary in Whitworth for Millie Wilson.

She said: “Going back everything just looked small. I learnt about how children respond differently and I worked in the two Reception classes. I want to be a Reception class teacher.”

Working with adults with mental health issues was the career plan Lucas Davies had already mapped out for himself before he went on work experience.

After a week with Healey Care working at Woodleigh House in Waterfoot, he now knows it is the right choice for him. He said: “We did something different every day. We went bowling and to the cinema and did different activities.

“On the days when we couldn’t go out, I learnt about the Healthcare Act and mental health and I also learnt how to sign my name and the alphabet in British Sign Language.”

He is hoping to continue working in a voluntary capacity.

His supervisor from Healey Care said: “Lucas demonstrated great empathy and integrity towards all of our clients. He offered his time and was patient when speaking and listening to those with communication barriers.”

Frank Duffy and Son Funeral Service was the unusual choice for Mason Mitchell, but they are family friends.

He said: “I had to wash the cars and then go on practice funeral runs to check out routes for the cars to make sure they could avoid any traffic problems from the homes to the service and then to the cemetery.

“It was a nice environment and the people were really nice to work for.”

Will Harris spent his week at Adobe Architecture in Manchester where he got to design the floor plan of a terraced house and also draw houses that had already been built.
