Artist Matt puts his appliance of science on show
ALOCAL artist is currently holding an exhibition at Hollingworth Lake’s Visitor Centre.
Matt Butcher has been producing art “ever since he could hold a pencil” and now has his second exhibition on display at the visitor centre.
Matt, who has previously worked as a drafter at an architects until he was made redundant, earned a degree in Scientific and Natural History Illustration from Blackpool and the Fylde College.
The exhibition will run until March 30, and features highly detailed studies of buildings and insects.
The 47-year-old, who has lived in Rochdale for eight years, is also working on a children’s booked aimed at primary school children, Insects and Instruments, while he works part-time in a warehouse to pay the bills.
Matt said: “It’s something I have always done.
“Constantly doodling and all that kind of staff, ever since I was a kid.
“I did a degree in scientific illustration the way I draw has always been a bit more technical.
“I don’t really do fine art, it’s more practical application. It’s quite niche and hard to break into.
“It’s one of the things where there are a lot of people out there who are very good at it, and there’s more of us than you would think.”
Speaking about his exhibition, Matt said: “I have decided to relax my style a bit and have more fun with it.
“I live nearby, so I went down to front desk to ask how to apply for an exhibition.
“They gave me a form and I sent in some examples of my work.
“There’s a variety - I don’t want to be too specialist.
“I have had an exhibition before but it was a few years back.
“I look forward to exhibitions and it’s good to get a bit of exposure.
“I have sold some things, but it’s just nice to get your art out in the fresh air.”
