Three men are injured in crash on roundabout
AWOMAN died and three men were injured, one seriously, after a car collided with a grass verge on a roundabout and overturned.
The tragedy happened at Slattocks roundabout near Rochdale border with Middleton’s on Friday night.
The roundabout links the A627M with Rochdale Road, opposite Stakehill Industrial Estate.
The car involved, a blue Skoda Fabia, came to rest near the Ship Inn pub.
The woman - who was a passenger in the car was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, police have confirmed.
She has not named.
Greater Manchester Police said three men were also in the car.
Two of them, aged 37 and 40, were taken to hospital with what have been described by police as minor injuries.
The third man - aged 52 - was taken to hospital with a serious back injury.
Police said on Saturday he remained in a stable condition in hospital.
Three men were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous been driving, said.
All three remain in custody for questioning.
Detective Constable Emma Kennedy, of GMP’s Serious Collison Investigation Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the woman’s family at this very difficult time.
“Although we have arrested three people, our enquiries are very much still ongoing and our officers are working tirelessly to find out more details about what happened before the collision.”I am aware that this was not a busy time of day, but I am hopeful that there are witnesses who may be police able to assist us further with our enquiries.
“If you witnessed this collision or have any dash cam footage or information that could assist us, please get in touch with police as soon as possible.”
In a statement, GMP said: “At around 10.30pm on Friday 20 March 2020, police were called to Slattocks roundabout in Middleton to reports that a Skoda Fabia has collided with a grass island and overturned.
“Police attended and woman - who was a passenger in the car - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
“A further three men were in the car at the time.
“Two of the men - aged 37 and 40 - were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
“The third man - aged 52 - was taken to hospital with a serious back injury, where he remains in a stable condition.
“Three men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
“They remain in custody for questioning.”
Police have launched an investigation and are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Witnesses said the Skoda was travelling around the roundabout towards Rochdale Road when it is believed to have collided with the verge.
Firefighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended with North West Ambulance Service paramedics.
Debris was strewn across the carriageway and tyre marks from the Skoda were embedded in a grass verge.
Officers from GMP’s Accident Investigation Unit also attended.
