Gingers spice up meals to help beat virus blues

ANEWLY opened independen­t food bar is fighting back against the effects of coronaviru­s on local businesses - with a kindhearte­d gesture.

Gingers Food Bar opened just six weeks ago in Mills Hill, Middleton, and has now closed under government guidance, but is still offering home delivery.

Owner Rebekha D’Stephano is offering food to vulnerable people in the area, including the over 70s, those classed as vulnerable, and single parents who can’t get out, if they are nominated by others.

She is putting together food boxes containing home cooked meals, soups, basics such as bread, milk, juice, biscuits, cereal bars or cereal, noodles, cup-asoups, goods that will last, and even dog food tins.

Rebekha said she has been “inundated.”

She said: “This is a free of charge service of no financial gain and I am still paying my staff.

“We work within the guidelines of Food Hygiene Standards, so all hygiene levels are adhered to at all times.

“We will, knock, see the recipient and drop the box or bag.”

She continued: “We’ve opened at a massively bad time.

“We had a lot of traffic in the morning but we saw a massive drop in that.

“Sales half.

Rebekha previously worked in the prison system to rehabilita­te highrisk offenders back into society, before the opportunit­y to open a cafe came up, as the fell by about doing building is owned by her brother.

She said: “I have a business mind and there was a lot of potential here.

“There’s lots of industry around and we are just a cafe who do a lot of healthy meals including catering to Weight Watchers and Slimming World.

“We’re not just a butties and bacon place.”

Rebekha wants to support the community.

She said: “We can manage the requests at the moment.

“A lot of people have nominated family members or neighbours.

“I think people need to swallow their pride because the help is there.

“It doesn’t you’re needy.

“If you need food dropping off that’s fine.

“I’m doing this because of community spirit - I can do it, so why not?” mean
