Figures show least care home deaths

-

NEW figures released on the number of coronavirus deaths in care homes across the country have revealed that Rochdale recorded the lowest number of deaths in Greater Manchester.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) last Tuesday (April 28) released previously unavailable data on the number of Covid-19 related deaths in care homes that had been registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) between Friday 10th and Friday 24th April.

These showed that 16 people died in Rochdale care homes in this period, accounting for 53 per cent of all 30 deaths occurring in the borough’s facilities in this period.

This compares to neighbouring Oldham, which registered the highest number of coronavirus deaths in care homes in Greater Manchester with 37 lives lost (60pc of care home deaths),

However Rochdale still exceeds the national average of 37pc of care home deaths being related to coronavirus with over half its deaths occurring in connection with Covid-19, as is also the case in Oldham, Salford, Tameside, and Bolton.

Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for adult care, said: “We have been working very closely with our care homes and providers to ensure they receive the highest quality of support to help meet the challenges at this difficult time.

“I am very proud of the work of our staff and all frontline workers across the borough.”

He added: “It is reassuring that we are heading in the right direction, but there is still a lot of work to do and we will continue to ensure all local care homes and care providers are supported in any way possible.”
