Impact of virus disappointing across age spectrum

-

we came out of our 13 week lockdown I was under the impression that such a sacrifice by so many would have resulted in the Covid-19 virus being brought under control.

I knew it would not have gone away, but we would be able to manage it and slowly our lives would get back to normal.

Then I would resume my public duties in my mayoral capacity. How wrong I was! The infection rate is increasing and it’s frightening, especially for the elderly.

Normally in my column I report on events and people in the Borough that lift our morale and give us cause to celebrate and sometimes even smile.

Sadly this report is not the case and I have even more bad news.

I have been informed that the annual British Legion Commemoration and march past for Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph scheduled for November 8 has been cancelled.

To my understanding there has never been a year since the end of the War that the annual commemoration and wreath laying hasn’t happened.

This will, I feel, upset our elderly citizens.

However, just to show that the virus doesn’t differentiate disappointment age wise, the annual Christmas Tree lights ‘switch on events’ across the borough have also been cancelled.

No Father Christmas this year; when he found out instead of shouting Ho Ho Ho, he cried No No No!

Any event that could result in crowding inside or outside has to be discouraged.

It’s vital that we prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

I may be biased but I have noted mostly that it’s the elderly who wear face masks in shops.

There are lots of other younger people who wear them, which is right and proper, but far too many don’t.

The UK Government announced on Friday, July 24, the wearing of Face coverings will be mandatory in enclosed public spaces including shops, supermarkets, shopping centres and transport hubs.

The word mandatory means compulsory.

The infection rate is still rising and if people don’t obey the regulations they are prolonging our return to safe normal living standards and they are endangering lives.

Because of this, looks like Christmas this year is going to be a bleak affair.

However one good thing a little fairy told me in secret; that this year Father Christmas is being made to wear a mask.

He will make a really good role model, or perhaps even one better; a good Roly Poly model.
