Opinion split on lockdown

-

AS six million more people entered tier four from Boxing Day, fears are being raised that the country may go into a new national lockdown or that Greater Manchester will go into tier four as coronavirus cases rise and the new variant spreads across the UK.

We asked people in Rochdale for their views on a second lockdown on the Rochdale Observer Facebook page. Many believe another lockdown can’t be helped, whereas others are firmly against the idea.

Yvonne Hunt said: “Lockdowns don’t work – how many times have true virologists actually said that – more than I can count on one hand – this is all about control of the population and has really sinister undertones.”

Anne-Marie Almond said: “Sadly it’s where we’re headed. We need a clear message, which seems difficult to make and which will be unpalatable to some.

“Stay home, stay safe and when out in public remember we’re not all in your bubble. Walk in single file when passing others or stand to the side.

“It’s not rocket science – distance from people not in your household/bubble.

“We all have places to be – I should be in Australia with family but this isn’t a UK problem, it’s global.”

Corinne Michelle said: “The government haven’t got a clue, were going round in circles all the time. Lock us down – numbers go down – let us out, numbers go up. Just do the people a favour and get us back to normal and get rid that way.”

Claire Bear said: “Whatever happens, natural selection will prevail. If you choose to mix and contribute to spreading covid and killing off the elderly and infirm, then you’re helping depopulate the country and in the long run reducing pressure on the NHS, care homes, benefits and other funding systems.

“I personally would like measures to remain tighter until the vaccine programme is well underway and its proving to reduce the spread.”

Sarah Jayne said: “I don’t see any other way of reducing transmission rates.”

Debbie Harrison said: “Lockdown should be proper lockdown or not at all. No good some suffering while others are partying, some isolating and some not.”

Lynne Hudson said: “If numbers keep increasing yes.”

Lee Glover said: “It’s happening whether we want it to or not. Anybody who thinks otherwise is in dreamland, they really are.”

Dler Hassan Delizhay added: “Please no.”

Tony Seed said: “Have the lockups worked so far? I’d rather take the risk of living in a free world than be safe living in a prison.”
