Residents flee homes as fire engulfs house
ANUMBER of homes had to be evacuated after a fire ripped through a terraced house on Christmas Day evening.
The fire service was called to Agincourt Street, Heywood, shortly after 9pm to reports of a blaze, which engulfed both storeys of the house and its roof space, which appears to have been destroyed.
Neither the police or fire service have reported that anyone was injured in the fire. Greater Manchester Police say neighbouring homes had to be evacuated, and they understood residents were staying with relatives.
Police said it is still too early to determine the cause of the blaze and investigations are ongoing. Officers and firefighters remained at the scene on Boxing Day.
Residents living nearby say they saw black smoke pouring from the building and a large number of fire engines arriving at the scene.
A Greater Manchester
Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said at the time: “Just after 9pm on Friday 25 December eight fire engines, the Technical Response Unit from Ashton, and one hose-laying lorry were called to reports of a building fire at Agincourt Street, Heywood.
“The fire involved the kitchen, first floor and roof space of a terraced property.
“Crews arrived quickly and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked hard to extinguish the blaze using three hose reels, two ladders, a smoke curtain and a thermal imaging camera. Firefighters remain at the scene this morning.”
