Rubbish found dumped
FLY-TIPPING from addresses in Rochdale and Norden have been found among a huge dump of rubbish in Rossendale.
Joanna Jonathan spotted the mess left off Commerce Road, Haslingden, from two separate addresses.
She said: “I understand this is possibly people that have paid a company in good faith to dispose of their rubbish and I’m sure they’d be disgusted to find it dumped, blocking roads in a neighbouring town.
“This has been reported to the council and the names and addresses given, purely so the right people can be held accountable.”
In the trash was mostly household waste, including dressing gowns, shoes, lampshades, and torn open bags spilling rubbish over the road.
Highways England, who are responsible for the land, said: “We’ve been straight out, identified bags of rubbish and other debris in this location and have asked our contractors to remove. Depending on the location (some locations require an overnight closure for example) and availability of a team this will be done as soon as possible. We operate a 24/7 customer contact centre on 0300 123 5000 and anyone with concerns about fly-tipping and litter on our major A roads and motorways can contact us on that number.”
Rossendale Borough Council said: “Highways England are responsible for the removal of the rubbish as it is on land owned by them. It was initially reported to them in February. However, since then we understand there has been considerably more fly tipping adding to the problem.
“The investigation and enforcement fall to Rossendale Borough Council and we are currently undertaking investigations to gather further evidence.”
