School pupils find write words to claim top prize
TWO high school pupils have won £100 in an academic writing competition was sponsored by Manchester-based businesses.
St Cuthbert’s RC High School on Shaw Road in Rochdale ran the competition for year nine and 10 children who were asked to write a 600-word essay on a topic of their choice.
Josef Pevec-loft, year nine, and Mary Saju, year 10, won first prize.
Josef wrote a piece on the Nagorno-karabakh conflict while Mary wrote about Parasite and Class – Parasite being an awardwinning South Korean film.
Mary wrote: “It explores contemporary class differences that exist and are prevalent in the world today, through the use of symbolism, the relationships among characters and the overall plot of the movie” before explaining how the film demonstrated this.
Josef’s essay on the Nagorno-karabakh conflict investigated how borders were created, the war and a discussion on the “wider problems of loosely-drawn national borders.”
Phil Mccaibe from Hybrid Electrical Solutions and Paul Parkinson from Unite Interiors Ltd sponsored the contest.
Runners-up were Wiktoria Pancyk, year nine, and Olivia Buckley, year 10, who won £50.
Grace Nugent, second in department in English at the school, said: “The competition was open to year nine and 10 as year 11 had lost out on a lot.
“The whole point was there is always a creative writing competition but there wasn’t anything that promoted academic writing.
“They had to write a 600-word piece of writing that focused on something factual – what they wrote about was up to them.
“We got a lot more than we thought we would – overall there were about 55 kids that entered.
“We thought the school closure would have impacted that. It was really hard to pick a winner because they were all really original pieces of writing, things that I wouldn’t have expected.”
