What’s on at The Lowry

- BY STEVE GRIFFITHS

IT is great to welcome back writer Steve Griffiths to this column with coverage of what’s on at the Lowry Theatre: The Lowry is back! And it knows how to build an audience.

Firstly, employ Mischief Theatre company which has been going for 10 years.

Next, put on a play like ‘The Play that goes Wrong’ which has more physical jokes than I’ve had hot dinners.

In fact, it’s likely that if you go to see it the cast will be very different to the one I saw as the chance of getting injured is so high that they have special accident insurance.

Next, put on a play from the same company, ‘Groan ups’ which has more sexual innuendo in five minutes than you can shake a stick at; and it would have to be a big stick to meet the bar they set

Having established a suitable mood, the Lowry has then turned to a range of excellent productions.

Everyones talking about Jamie (September 1-12) is everyone’s favourite big-hearted musical.

Telling of how a normal northern young man finds fame and fortune by jumping on tables and wearing sexy boots is an inspirational play.

Who needs GCSES and university bills when you can make your way in the world with a song in your heart and the support of your mum?

Just the play to see before returning to the educational/work grind.

And who cares about Covid when you sing along with the rest of the audience (in your mask, of course).

But the Lowry is not just about indoor fun; Roundabout in Victoria Park, Salford, September 9-12, gives an opportunity for one of the great touring companies, Paines Plough to put on their gladrags.

COMING up: Wednesday, December 8, 2021-Saturday, January 15, 2022 – The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Direct from London, the smash hit production of C.S. Lewis’ classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, voted the nations favourite book in 2019, is coming to The Lowry this Christmas.

Step through the wardrobe into the enchanted kingdom of Narnia. Join Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter as they wave goodbye to wartime Britain and embark on the most magical of adventures in a frozen, faraway land where they meet a faun, talking beavers, the noble king of Narnia, Aslan, and the coldest, most evil of all, The White Witch.
