Volunteers wanted to rough it for veterans

-

VOLUNTEERS are wanted for a rough sleeping event which will be held at Rochdale’s Crown Oil Arena.

Hosted by Adam Trennery, who runs Their4u Fundraising and set up Rochdale AFC’S Military Veterans team, the event will take place on Friday November 19 at the stadium.

People are encouraged to sleep rough for one night to raise money for charities Dale In The Community Sports Trust and Helping Homeless Veterans-uk.

Adam, 30, who left the navy in 2016 before setting up the football team in March 2019, said this event was close to his heart.

He said: “I manage the veterans football team so deal week in, week out with military veterans.

“Every charity I raise money for I want to do something different and this one is quite close to home because it is for homeless military veterans. The Dale trust does a similar thing, they make food hampers for those in need.

“We’re just trying to raise awareness for those in need and raise as much money as we can.”

Adam, who works for BT Openreach, said it will also give people the opportunity to experience what homeless people have to face on a daily basis.

“We’ve got a lot of privileges, we’ve got a roof over our heads and things like that so it will be good to experience one night of what they are actually going through and see how tough it is,” he said.

“I wanted to do it in a safe location so Rochdale have kindly let us use one of the concourses at the stadium.

“We’re gonna have some food at 10pm and we’re going to have bacon buttys in the morning when we’re done.” Adam said he has also launched a Gofundme for the event and is also on the lookout for any businesses to sponsor the event.

He added that those participating in the sleep will be asked to raise a minimum of £100 before the event.

Through working with the football team, Adam said he had experienced the problems veterans can face once they leave the military.

“It can be quite lonely once you leave because you’ve haven’t got the banter with all the lads,” said Adam.

“It’s like a family in the military and once you leave it’s a big world out there. You’ve got to fend for yourself.

“We’re not just a football team, we’re a unit where anyone can chat to us for anything.”

Adam hopes the rough sleeping event will help veterans and other homeless people alike.

He said: “We’re raising money for two great causes and because of Covid times have been tough so any little will help them massively.

“No military veteran deserves to be sleeping rough on the street.

“We’ll experience what they go through on a daily basis.”
