THE organiser of Heywood Christmas Toy Appeal has announced that the initiative, which gives toys to needy children, will not be continuing this year.

The appeal, which has been ongoing each Christmas for several years, saw Martyn Allen, who runs Shaw’s Opticians, on Market Street, Heywood, appeal for people to donate new or lightlyused toys which would be redistributed to needy families in the town.

In a post on social media, Martyn, 46, said: “Unfortunately the Toy Appeal will not be continuing this year.

“After six very successful years, helping to give thousands of local children a happy Christmas morning, I am no longer able to continue.

“Various factors have led me to make this difficult decision, and I haven’t taken it lightly.

“I would like to thank Susan and Frank Coates for their support throughout the years, and to everyone who volunteered their time or donations to help. Other local charity shops will accept toys if you are donating. Thank you.”

In a further comment, he cited reasons including lack of free time and storage

Martyn, from Radcliffe, had earlier this year been nominated for the Pride of Bury’s Community Hero award.

Supporters have now thanked him for his efforts over the years.

One said: “Thank you

Martyn for all your hard work and for making Christmas special for so many.” Another added: “This is so sad but thank you very much.

“The achievement is amazing and you have brought happiness to so many. “Thank you Martyn.” The toy appeal would regularly bring toys for free to around 300 children, including more expensive gifts for older children, who would be referred by schools and social services.

Martyn was unavailable for comment.
