Scare-raising festival proves debut success

THE first ever Littleboro­ugh Scarecrow Festival raised over £500 for a local charity.

The festival was organised by Vickie Mason, 39, Craig Chadwick, and Andy Lord, who were inspired after seeing Wardle’s festival.

They had over 100 entries for the competitio­n and the money raised will go to ReUse Littleboro­ugh, which aims to reduce the amount

Vickie said: “I shared the Wardle festival to a community group and Craig got in touch about organising one in Littleboro­ugh.

“Littleboro­ugh has lost its community spirit in the last 18 months [during the pandemic] so the purpose was to bring happiness to lots of screaming children!” Vickie has a son aged five, and two young stepchildr­en.

She said: “We decided to do a map so people could do a trail around the village and sell them so we could donate the money to charity.

“We had 30 entries in the first week, and 136 entries altogether.

“It was good to see that people had put so much time and effort into their scarecrows.” Vickie created a policeman with a speed gun which was placed on the pelican crossing.

She said: “We were trying to slow people down on the road.

“We’re planning to do it again next year but in September so it doesn’t clash with Littleboro­ugh in Pink.

“It went really well and we had a really good response.

“We didn’t think we’d raise much which was fantastic and we’re hoping to make it bigger and better next year.

“We hope to find a local graphic designer to help with printing costs.

“It’s been a remarkable success.” In first place was the horse and cart by Emma and Denise who won a chocolate hamper donated by the Co-op, in second place was Nicola Tarney with needle in the bum, who won a voucher for the Cherry Tree Cafe, and in third place was Happy Jacks Children’s Day Nursery, with Jack and the beanstalk, who won two main meals at King William.

A cheque for £512.44 was presented to Re-use Littleboro­ugh.
