ANEW hand car wash could be opened in Rochdale, if plans are approved, which would create eight new jobs.

The plans have been submitted by Howard Street Auto Centre on Duke Street and would add to the existing facility but won’t affect the repair garage.

The proposed car wash facility in the yard area would be of a relative size to allow for the business to expand and to function more effectively and efficiently with the proposed development.

The proposed car wash with its valeting bay would be complementary to the existing function of the existing business and is considered to be of a suitable size.

The damaged cars stored in the yard will be disposed of and the existing repair garage has sufficient storage availability internally for customers vehicles.

It is expected that the car wash would create eight new jobs, on top of the six people currently employed.

The nearest residential dwellings are positioned at a distance of approximately 100 metres to the west of the site on Whitehall Street.

The Design and Access statement said: “Given the surrounding area consists of noise generating uses and where trade vehicles and high level of traffic passes on the surrounding roads near the site, it is considered that the proposed introduction of noise from the jet wash equipment and comings and goings of vehicles through the site during the day would be compatible with the surrounding land uses and would not unduly harm local residential amenity.

“As such the proposed car wash would not have a significant negative impact on the amenity of surrounding land uses and businesses including amenity of residential occupiers.”

The car wash can handle up to six cars at any one time.

The application will be decided on by Rochdale Borough Council in coming weeks.

OCTOBER was another great month of top-class concerts, with an unusually varied diet of harp, soprano, guitar, and piano soloists.

October 6: Alice Roberts harp (post-grad RNCM & Manchester University Procter-gregg prize winner 2016 and 2018, and RNCM Gold Medallist 2020.

She is keen on exploring alternative styles of music, including jazz harp. Today’s repertoire created a wonderfully serene hour with the music of classical composers Debussy, Britten, Satie, Hindemith, Purcell, Cage and Whitacre as well as traditional tunes, much specially arranged for the instrument, some by Alice herself.

October 13: Margaret Ferguson soprano Jonathan Ellis piano – Ghanaian-born soprano Margaret came to Manchester with scholarships to the RNCM and also attended the European Mozart Academy in Poland.

Margaret marked her long-awaited return to St Mary’s with glorious sacred solos by Bach, Mozart and Liddle.

Then to the musical stage with excerpts from The Baker’s Wife and The Desert Song and fantastic jazz numbers by Ellington and Gershwin.

The words from her finale Never Enough, and This Is Me from The Greatest Showman said it all.

She was accompanied superbly by Jonathan Ellis, another prize-winning RNCM and Manchester ‘double’ graduate.

October 20: Richard Haslam classical guitar – completed a post-graduate degree at the RNCM, with Craig Ogden, having previously graduated from the University of Hull.

He performed Fernando Sor, Augustin

Barrios Mangore, Villa-lobos and the lively contemporary composer Gary Ryan, concluding with the Renaissance lute music of John Dowland.

October 27: Duncan Glenday piano – delivered Mozart’s Sonata in C K 309 in masterly fashion followed by Suite Bergamasque by Debussy, the third movement of which is the well-known Clair de Lune.

After this sublime playing, we then had fireworks with Chopin’s celebratory ‘Military’ Polonaise in A.

Yet another prizewinning Manchester ‘double’ graduate in this month’s line-up, he now enjoys a busy and varied performing career as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and teacher.

He has performed over 300 concerts throughout the UK.

How fortunate that such illustrious alumni are willing to come and perform at Rochdale’s weekly midday music – the award-winning Toad Lane Concerts that happen every Wednesday at 12.30pm at St Mary in the Baum, Toad Lane, Rochdale, OL16 1DZ.
