Mayfield in strong show at Lock Lane
THIS was another good performamce from Mayfield despite the result – Lock lane are a quality side averaging around 40 points per game.
So to restrict them to 24 on their own ground was a testament to the effort and industry Sam Butterworth’s side put in on Saturday.
Mayfield were desperately unlucky to find themselves 10-0 down against the run of play.
When Reece Hamlett plucked a Cole Connolly bomb out of the air and crossed for a try with three defenders on his back, converted by Connolly, it looked like a shock could be on the cards, 10 -6 at half time and Mayfield were coming good. Dec Sheridan, Connolly, and Darcy Maroske were all outstanding and Butterworth and Steve Wood were pleased with the way the game was balanced.
A poor start to the second half put paid to their chances though as a dropped bomb, then a bit of poor defence, allowed the home side the opportunity to score two unanswered tries, 20-6.
Mayfield seemed to have switched off and lost their concentration as a cheep try from the acting half back extended the lead to 24-6.
The visitors weren’t done and Si Moore had some telling runs but they took their toll and he had to leave the field.
Mayfield were unlucky again after Rob Kershaw backed up a brilliant Dec Sheridan break and found Lewis Butterworth who lost the ball over the line.
Mayfield again were pushing on the lock lane line when Butterworth finished a great move with a try under the sticks, converted by connolly.
Final score 24-10 but this could have gone either way had Mayfield had a bit more luck with the ball.
