It looked like that Dale would have to settle for a point until deep in stoppage time when O’connell intercepted a pass midway inside his own half and carried the ball through the middle of the pitch, taking it past a number of Hartlepool bodies.
With Dale runners attracting the attention of backpeddling defenders, O’connell drove into the space before sending an unstoppable shot from 25 yards wide of Killip.
