Teams take up swords in combat for cup of glory

HUNDREDS of spectators watched as competitor­s fought head to head in medieval combat for the Castleton Cup trophy.

Organised by the Honour & Arms Club, Whitworth, competitor­s battled it out at Castleton Primary School’s playing fields in both group and singles categories over two days.

Over the Easter weekend (April 16 and 17) between 300 and 400 members of the public joined to witness the epic battle.

Daniel George, owner of Honour & Arms Club and the captain of The Northern Wolves and fighter for Primus, said: “The action was vicious and lots of hard work was done and it was great.

“The fighters kept the energy up despite the heat over the weekend.

“The event went really well and we live streamed it on Youtube too.”

Buhurt League Challenger took place on Saturday 16 with both male and female teams competing in 5v5 action as well as the male teams joining forces to fight in 12v12.

The women from Swords of Cygnus trimuphed after fighting over three rounds with Armoured Combat Gloucester Hellions for the trophy.

The ladies then split off into three teams and fought each other again in a roundrobin format.

The male teams of White Company, The Northern Wolves, Armoured Combat

Gloucester, Primus, Invicta and ISCA fought in a roundrobin format for the 5v5 Castleton Cup trophy.

White Company took home first place with Primus in second and Invicta in third.

After three fights White Company were victorious in the 12v12 round over Primus/northern Wolves/ ACG in joint second, with Invicta and ISCA in joint third.

On the following day the remaining fighters competed for six hours in singles discipline­s which included longsword, sword and shield, sword and buckler and polearm.

Honour & Arms Club is an independen­t club dedicated to the study and competitio­n of Full Contact Medieval Combat to HMB or IMCF rules.

The Castleton Cup marks the official start of the Historic Medieval Battle UK League.
