Charity scrum down is £620 winner

-

A CHARITY rugby match held in memory of a former Littleborough player has raised £620 for motor neurone disease.

The match between Littleborough and Oldham was held in memory of Julian ‘Bebbi’ Bebbington, who passed away in July last year at the age of 60.

He joined Littleborough rugby club in the 1980s and played for 20 years before joining Oldham Vets team.

In later life Julian was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).

Julian was born in Newcastle-under-lyme, where he was a county sprinter and shot putter in his teens, before moving to Rochdale in early 80s to pursue a career in teaching at Roch Valley High School.

Friend and former teammate Brent Pollitt said: “All in all a great day and afterwards we presented Julian’s widow, Pauline, with a Boro rugby shirt made into a cushion.

“We also made, through raffles and contributions, £620 for motor neurone disease for which Julian was diagnosed with and passed away last year.”

Brent added that his former front-row partner was a ‘good lad’ and a well-respected teacher.

He said: “He was a very good rugby player, very committed but he caught this horrible disease which cut his life short.

“He came to a few games when he was diagnosed and came to my wedding – he was in a wheelchair.

“Julian was an outdoor kind of guy who enjoyed canoeing, walking and skiing.”
