Comedy at Falinge Park
OVER the last few weeks, we at Falinge Park Writing Group have been considering the skill of writing comedy.
We commenced this mini project with a session on structure and function of comedy facilitated by Eileen Earnshaw.
This coincided with the resurrection of the monthly Comedy Club nights at the Flying Horse Hotel that were sadly discontinued, as well as a many other events, during the Covid lockdown.
This was a great night out, ticketed at only £10 and the offer of 10 per cent off the food bill for the evening – it was a great choice to start a weekend.
The event featured four comedians that included Ignacio Lopez, Danny Deegan, Pete Selwood and newcomer to the comedy circuit Anthony Grogan.

Following this, we were able to engage the amazing writer, actor and stand-up comedian Tony Burgess for a question-and-answer session in which we discussed all things comedy.
Tony has written for, among others, Steve Coogan and Johnny Vegas as well as many situation comedies.
It was an informative, useful and very entertaining session.
This particular project will be brought to a close by Robin Parker who presented his workshop on writing parody on May 26.
For those who attend the ppen mike nights on the first Sunday of every month at the Flying Horse, Robin is well known for his gift in creating parody and has entertained us at these events many times.
He shares the responsibility of being M.C. for the open mike nights with Eileen Earnshaw.
On June 2 our workshop will be ‘Celebrations’.
Well, it had to be really, didn’t it?
We will look at all aspects of celebration, what we celebrate, why we celebrate and how we celebrate.
There will of course be plenty of time for writing as there are in all our sessions.
June 9 will continue our theme of celebration with a look at the work of the American poet Walt Whitman, his connection to the north west and a brief analysis of some of his work.
Gaia Holmes makes a welcome return on June 16 – an event we look forward to with great anticipation.
Gaia is a well known, published poet.
She has facilitated a workshop for us once before and the feedback from that event was phenomenal.
