The celebration over, we now get on with what we can call the more normal events of church life.

Like Mission Community 4’s Prayer Launch with Bishop Mark which will take place on Sunday, June 19, 7pm, at St Thomas’s, Newhey.

Mission 4 comprises of the three C of E parishes in Littleborough; that’s Holy Trinity; St Barnabas’s, Shore and St James’, Calderbrook, plus St Andrew’s, Dearnley, plus St Thomas’s, Newhey and St James’s, Milnrow.

All are welcome at this Prayer Launch with Bishop Mark; it’s important we show our support for and interest in the concept and the work of these Missions as the C of E moves forward and adapts to changing habits and a changing world.

The Archdeacon’s Visitation will be on Monday, June 13, at St Chad’s, Rochdale,

■ Now the sun is finally here, keeping plants well hydrated – particularly those in pots and containers – is the top priority.

■ Take softwood cuttings. The tender new growth of many plants will root easily (eg fuchsia, hydrangea, lavender). Cut beneath a leaf node where there is a concentration of growth hormones, trim leaves and dip in rooting powder, and plant in a pot.

■ How’s your compost heap? Turn it over to air it and add some moisture if it is too dry.

■ Water peas and beans – they are starting to flower so will be particularly thirsty as they form pods. Carrot seedlings will need to be thinned out.

■ Fruit in pots will need a high potash liquid feed and those in the ground will like a sprinkle of slow-release fertiliser. Protect developing fruits from the birds with netting.

■ Hot sunny days can cause overheating in the greenhouse so keep vents and windows open during the day and check plants daily for watering. Damp down on very hot days with a hose to increase humidity.

■ Lilies need staking now.
