A RAWTENSTALL school is set to take part in a project to inspire young people to create modern folk music through learning about their local heritage.

Pupils from Alder Grange are among six schools working alongside staff from Lancashire County Council’s heritage learning team, local historians, awardwinning The Young’uns folk group and music producer Andy Bell to write and record 10 folk songs.

A concert to celebrate the project, giving the pupils the opportunity to perform their songs alongside The Young’uns, will be held next year.

CDs and a supporting resource book, to be launched in May 2017, will be used by schools to celebrate Lancashire’s history.

This project is a joint initiative between Lancashire County Council and The Young’uns.

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: “I’m really pleased that both primary and secondary school children are involved in this project.

“Those involved will get the chance to explore and to research Lancashire’s rich industry and traditional oral storytelling.

“They will then have the chance to draw the history, folklore and people together to produce something contemporary which will also have an important legacy for both teachers and other young people.

“Our local history is too important to be allowed to be forgotten or untold.

“I think this project will be really enjoyable for the children and something that they will be able to feel really proud of.”
