Back to basics in this neck of the woods...

KAYLEE LASSETER gets away from it all in a log cabin

-

WOODPECKER Lodge is the perfect place if you want to get away from it all. We decided to visit as we were looking for something a little out of the ordinary.

I had always wanted to stay in a log cabin, they remind me of my childhood where I used to make wooden huts and dens in the woods. I instantly fell in love with Woodpecker Lodge when I saw it and hoped it would be a less muddy and adult version of the fun I once had as a child.

Nestled in the beautiful north Devon countryside you will definitely find some peace here.

We entered the Bulworthy Forest Lodges site not really knowing what to expect. We drove up the winding road and noticed a number of beautiful lodges. We saw that a few of them had hot tubs and immediately regretted not booking one of those.

Once we located our lodge we opened the car doors and were immediately hit with the scent of trees and foliage, it was lovely. To be honest, I’d actually forgotten what it was like to be somewhere that smelt so fresh and natural. It had been so long since I had visited somewhere in England away from a city that it was actually quite a surprise.

We climbed up the steps to our lodge and looked around inside, it really was a treat. We appreciated the TV, as while we like to get away from everything we do love a little entertainment! We noticed there was no wifi or signal available at the lodge which was a blessing and a curse. It made planning activities and routes to shops much more difficult however it was nice to not constantly be looking at my phone screen for once.

I eagerly took a look at the bedroom upstairs which is accessed via a ladder. It was beautiful and I loved that the upstairs had its own little balcony which is ideal for evening reading or early-morning relaxation.

Once downstairs we began the process of unpacking. The kitchen is great and comes with everything you need. The fridge even included a small freezer compartment which gave us a few more meal options and was much appreciated.

When unpacking our clothes we found navigating the ladder slightly difficult, and would definitely recommend a team effort here, but it was all in good fun.

We needed to nip to the shops to pick up a few more supplies for lunch and dinner. This actually proved to be more difficult than we expected due to the wifi and network situation but it also highlighted how dependent we were on our phones, and how this can actually be a bad thing.

We vaguely remembered passing a few shops when heading towards the lodge so we decided to retrace our steps until we could get signal and find a supermarket. Once in the town it was easy to find the supermarket and we stocked up on numerous treats to enjoy during our stay.

Once back at the lodge we decided to go for a walk and explore the grounds. The area is beautiful and provided lovely scenery for our little adventure.

As the sun started setting we decided it was time to head back to our lodge, make dinner and have a well deserved cider.

It really was a beautiful sight. We sat on the swinging bench at the front of our cabin with a cider in hand watching the sun set through the trees.

The kitchen facilities were great and we had everything we needed to make a lovely meal. One of the plus sides to the lodge was that it had a fully kitted kitchen which meant you could dine on the cheap and save some money.

The dining area really is a treat at Woodpecker Lodge, with windows surrounding the table you get to look out at the woodland whilst enjoying your meal; we saw several squirrels running around and climbing up trees, not a sight you’d really get to see in central Manchester without going to somewhere like Heaton Park.

For those a little more adventurous than us the lodge is ideally situated for people who enjoy cycling and even quad biking.

It is a lovely lodge and a great place to go if you are glued to your phone and need to get back to basics.
