Peters upbeat despite defeat

- SHELDAN KEAY

BACUP Borough manager Brent Peters was full of praise for his side despite their 3-2 defeat to City of Liverpool FC on Saturday.

Peters’ men conceded two late goals to begin their North West Counties Division One campaign with a defeat, but the Bacup boss felt that his team deserved more from the match.

“We all know that football can be cruel at times, and that certainly was the case for us in that highly entertaining game,” he said. “Whilst we lost this game in the final minutes, a game we most certainly did not deserve to lose, in defeat I cannot praise my boys enough.

“Each and every one of them worked hard, and once we shortened our game up and stopped forcing the ball then our ball retention was good.

“We created several opportunities which maybe we should have been more clinical with at times, but having said that, the two goals we did score were well executed.”

Bacup struggled to cope with set-pieces during the game, and Peters admits that is a slight concern.

“I am obviously disappointed with the goals we conceded but sometimes you have to credit the opposition,” he said. “Their opening goal was from a terrific cross but if I have to be critical we should without doubt have stopped the cross. We did not and we got punished for that. Equally to concede from two corners is also a huge disappointment.

“If you take away the final minute when we lost the game then I am really proud by the way my boys contributed to an highly entertaining game, make no mistake by playing like we did play we will have more successful games than not.”
