JOHN MCQUINN

MR John McQuinn, of Greenbrook House, Whitworth, formerly of New Line, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 17, aged 96 years.

He was employed at J H Hirsts in Waterfoot as a maintenanc­e joiner and later worked at Rossendale Forme & Knife Co.

He enjoyed holidays, making toy models, doing jigsaws, watching sport on TV and being with his extended family.

He helped to form Bacup Credit Union, was a Knight of St Columba and was a very devoted practising Catholic.

He leaves nephew Kevin and his wife Christine, sister-in-law Norah, nephews Phil and Paul, nieces Berni, Siobhan, Barbara and Christine and several great nieces and nephews.

Requiem mass will be held at St Mary and St Anselm’s RC church, Bacup, on Wednesday, August 31 at 10.30am followed by cremation at Burnley at noon, conducted by Father Frank Thorpe.

Born in Waterfoot, he moved to Bacup in 1974.

JOZEFA LITKE

JOZEFA Litke, of Kent Walk, Helmshore, died on Monday, August 8, aged 89 years.

Mum, Josie, was born in Poland on mixed farmland that was taken over by the Soviet Red Army and is now part of the Ukraine.

After the war, she came to Britain, married and settled in Helmshore.

She worked in the local cotton mills and weaving sheds.

In Poland, she learnt many things, such as the ancient skill of producing linen from growing the flax, preparing it for spinning, and weaving it into the material.

She liked to knit and sew, but mostly, she loved her gardening.

She was the wife of the late Michael (Mario) who died in 1975. She leaves children Krystina, Edward, Lucy, Halina and John, six grandchild­ren and four great grandchild­ren.

The funeral service, conducted by Father John Mackie, will be held on Friday, August 26 at St Mary’s Church, Haslingden at 10am.

This will be followed by burial at Pleasingto­n Cemetery. Flowers are welcome.

NEIL BOOTH

NEIL Booth, of Holland Avenue, Rawtenstal­l, died on Wednesday, August 17, aged 83 years.

He was a retired roofer and worked for Barry Thompson.

He worked in the building trade.

He enjoyed singing and all outdoor pursuits.

He also did a parachute jump in his late seventies.

He leaves his step daughter Pauline, grandchild­ren Alex and Cath, Kieran and Emma, and Nick and Sally, seven great grandchild­ren, brothers Derek, Tom and his wife Dorothy and Keith and his wife Pat and nieces.

Prayers at the Chapel of Rest, conducted by the Rev Mark Faris-Robinson, will be held on Tuesday, August 30, at 12.15pm, followed by service and cremation at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 1pm.

Family flowers only with donations to Cancer Research UK.

ELSIE DEARDEN

ELSIE Dearden, of Jubilee Court, Haslingden, died on Friday, August 19 aged 83.

She was a partner in the family retail business T and E Footwear.

A loving wife and mother, family was her foremost interest followed by travelling, reading and bowling.

Wife of the late Thomas, she leaves son Ross and partner Alex, daughter Claire and partner Karlton, grandchild­ren Aidan and Abigail.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday, August 31 with a service at 11.30am at Manchester Road Methodist Church followed by a burial at Bacup Cemetery. Flowers welcome. Donations are requested for Rossendale Hospice. Funeral director: Paula Brennan of Johnson, Durning and Wood Funeral Services.

JANET RIDING

MRS Janet Riding, of Broadway Crescent in Haslingden, died on Saturday, August 20, aged 70.

Janet was a medical equipment assembler at Medex and enjoyed reading, gardening and travelling. She leaves her husband Geoff, children Shawn, Karen, Andrew and Chris, daughters-inlaw Carol, Debbie and Julie, grandchild­ren Matthew, Toni, Cherish, Georgia, Bella, Olivia, Jack and great-granddaugh­ter Demi, sisters Karelyn, Sheila, Silvia and Susan and brother Allen.

Her funeral will be held at Accrington Crematoriu­m at 11am on Friday, September 2. Flowers welcome. Funeral director: Johnson Durning and Woods Funeral Service..
