Bacup hit new heights

- SHELDAN KEAY

BACUP Borough manager Brent Peters thought his non-league side resembled a professional team during the 4-0 win over Ashton Town.

Peters’ men were dominant in the game, and he was understandably delighted with what he witnessed.

“I watch a lot of Football League and U23 matches where professional players are being drilled daily, then I watched our boys against Ashton Town.

“Believe me, what I witnessed from us was like watching a well-drilled professional team,” he said.

“It was a professional performance in a nonleague environment. We saw the athleticism of our two defenders, Nathan Emery and Luke Podmore, as they covered so much ground and quality, and they both got their just rewards by getting on the scoresheet.

“The boys have set the bar, the challenge is can they now consistently maintain this level of performance? For working lads it will maybe prove difficult but one thing is a stone wall certainty – we will all be striving for this level of consistency.

“It just shows, when we make correct decisions, limit our touches, move the ball into the areas we drill into them in training, we do create chances, score goals and win football matches.”

Peters is also glad that his side appears to have turned a corner after a frustrating start to the campaign.

“If I was frustrated by the lads’ bad decisions in vital areas in last week’s game, I am ecstatic this week by the fact they have taken everything told to them on board,” he said.

“It has been said many times that team shapes don’t win or lose you games, it is players within that team shape that can either make the shape or fail it.

“Based on our last two outings we have the players that are more than cable of making this shape work for us.

“I also must credit my coaches, Andrew and Ferre, who have worked hard on the players’ mentality in getting them drilled in what is required in ensuring the shape we play is very much positive in attack, and equally solid in defence when we lose possession.

“It is clear from our last two games we are going in the right direction having only conceded one goal, which was from the penalty spot, and scoring six goals.”
