TRIBUTES have been paid to a muchloved trader after his death, aged 55.

Barry Sagar, of Miles Avenue, Stacksteads, worked on market stalls for 20 years before joining LJ & R Wholesale Footwear Ltd in Waterfoot and in more recent years Courtesy Shoes in Bacup.

The grandfather-of-four had been suffering from severe spinal problems since December 2015 and passed away on Monday, September 26 after a battle with pneumonia.

His daughter Catherine O’Loughlin said he was a ‘genuinely hard-working man’ and a ‘much loved dad and grandad’ who loved supporting and pro- viding for his family.

She said: “He was very principled and loved being on markets as he was with people he loved.

“He was born and bred in Stacksteads and had never gone anywhere else. His brother was a market trader and that’s how he got into it.

“He did the Manchester area mainly, Stockport and Altrincham and started as a market trader from a young age.

“He loved being outside and being his own boss. He was doing something that helped provide for his family and that was the main important thing for my dad.

“He was very supportive, he was always there and would do anything for anybody if he could.

“Once he was on your side he would be there for you and do whatever we could.”

Barry was a keen fisherman and golfer and was a regular patron at the Farholme Tavern and Rosemount Working Men’s Club in Stacksteads.

Secondary school teacher Catherine, 38, who previously lived in Stacksteads before moving to Baxenden, said her father’s death came as a ‘massive shock’ to the family. She said: “He had been poorly and off work since December and had an operation in January on a compression in his spine but he was in a lot of pain.

“His mobility was seriously affected and he couldn’t do what he’d always done. He was a very proud man, my dad.

“His appetite virtually disappeared, he lost weight and got a chest infection which led to pneumonia.

“It was still a massive shock. Right up until the end we didn’t expect that to happen. He went very quickly at the end.”

His funeral service took place on Wednesday, October 5 at Burnley Crematorium led by Rev Philip Norris.
