Allanson is on target for Sunnybank

-

CROWN GREEN BOWLS ON a gloriously sunny September Sunday afternoon Sunnybank Social Club hosted The Rossendale Parks Bowling League Cairns Cup.

The semi-finals and final of this four man team competition took place on the day.

In the first semi-final Sunnybank C overcame Buchanan, just about requiring their handicap of 20, winning 88-70.

In the second semi-final a strong Gaghills A beat Edgeside by a healthy margin, 75-56.

Unfortunately for Gaghills their No 1 player, Andrew Cairns, could not play in the final due to prior commitments elsewhere. Nevertheless, they put out a strong side with Andrew’s wife, Carron, standing in.

Gaghills’ experienced Phil Worrall overcame youngster Toby Heys, who put up a spirited performance, 21-12. Carron Cairns proved to be a more than able substitute for Gaghills, beating Howard Scott 21-13.

However, Sunnybanks recent acquisition, seasoned performer Chad Sproston got the better of Brian Pritchard 21-16. In the final game on the green, Sunnybank’s muchimproved player, Ian Allanson, played out an excellent game with Michael Opie.

After going behind 12-2, Ian rallied and it came to the final end with both men on 20.

With the block in his hand, Ian bowled two magnificent “touchers” which Michael could not match and Sunnybank C emerged as the winners.

Paul Bennison, league secretary, and Darren law of league sponsors, DT Laws handed out the prize monies and trophies.

Thanks were also expressed to Mr.and Mrs Alan Cairns for, once again, sponsoring the Knock-Out Cup.
