Bobcats impress in memory of Malcolm

-

SWIMMING CHRISTINE NORMAN BURNLEY Bobcats, along with numerous other swimmers from swimming Clubs in Lancashire, to support the Level 3 Memorial Sprint Gala in memory of the late Malcolm Wilson.

Malcolm had been a stalwart figure in Lancashire Swimming and Swim North West in his role as referee and had been a mentor to many swimming officials.

It was a hugely successful event with all the proceeds from the gala being donated to his family’s chosen two charities, Bolton Hospice and The Christie Charity.

The swimmers from the Burnley squad ranged in ages from 9 years to 17 years and some fantastic swims were recorded throughout the one-day event at the Darwen pool. Between the squad they brought home a hoard of medals – 21 individual gold, 16 individual silver and 20 individual bronze medals as well as 4 gold and 2 bronze team medals.

Team golds were won in the mixed relay 200m medley events for the 11 years, 12 years and over 15 years as well as gold for the over 15 yrs team in the 200m freestyle relay event. The 11 year and 12 year age group came away with bronze medals in the 200m freestyle relay event.

This was the first event of the swimming calendar for the Bobcats, and for some of the younger members of the squad their very first competitive swim.

The Bobcats, who hold sessions at the St Peter’s Leisure Centre, Burnley and Padiham Leisure Centre, are now in full training and focusing on their next event, the North Lancashire Age Group Championships, which will be held at the Palatine pool in Blackpool over the forthcoming weekends, where they will each represent their respective home Clubs.

Head coach Noel Horton and assistant coach Craig Lord said: “We were so proud that so many of the Bobcats supported the event in memory of Malcolm, and to come away with so many medals and personal bests so early in the season was a fantastic achievement.”
