Valley brews up cup full of charity cheer

-

HUNDREDS of brews and slices of cake were consumed across the borough in aid of Macmillan for this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Inspired by teaching assistant Debbie Thompson, pupils at Fearns stayed behind after school to bake cakes and turned up early on the morning to prepare the arts theatre for their event. As well as serving cakes and brews to staff and pupils, prefects also welcomed parents and the public, raising more than £650.

Mrs Thompson said: “All of the pupils have been absolutely fantastic and in the morning the cakes just kept on coming in. We wrote to different businesses to get raffle prizes and we were also given a cake that had been specially made and decorated by one of our pupils Zara Pugh and her grandmother. I am amazed at the amount raised and very proud of our pupils and staff for this incredible achievement.”

A total of £250 was raised at Sion Baptist Church, Higher Cloughfold with a coffee morning of fellowship and fun on September 30, while on the same day, Trickett’s Insurance in Rawtenstall raised around £300.

St Nicholas Church, Newchurch also held a coffee morning event, which was was well attended by over 50 people and raised a wonderful £330.35.

Ilex View Medical practice in Rawtenstall held a coffee morning on September 30. All the staff at the practice baked a cake and entered it into a bake off contest that was judged by patient participation rep Bryan Adlum. Roland’s Florist kindly donated a bunch of flowers for the winner, Marion Lampert with her carrot cake muffins. The cake was sold to the staff and patients and raised £105.27.
